Chapter 16 A Plan Comes Together

The door opened, and the girls came in and joined us.

It wasn’t late. And Katie was right; everyone wanted to stay up for a bit. There were only two chairs at the table, so we moved to the sofa, pushed the coffee table out of the way, and made a little circle. Bright sat next to me on the couch.

I said, “Hey, I want to talk about some logistics and a few decisions.”

Angie said, “Should we get our notebooks?”

Katy said, “Yeah. Just in case. I’ll grab them.”

Bright said, “Did you and Katy have a good time and work some things out?”

I grinned and said, “I had a great time with Katy. And she says she enjoyed the heck out of it. Did you have a nice walk?”

Bright said, “It was good. Nothing to tell.”

Katy handed out the books and pens and settled in her chair.

I said, “It goes without saying that everyone gets a voice. But I’m going to propose some things. First, we’re moving in together, right?”

The girls looked at each other, and Bright spoke first.

She said, “We are. That decision was made, but let’s be explicit. Again. We are a family, and we are going to make changes to accommodate that. No more second-guessing. We do this. All the way.”

Angie said, “We are going to consolidate our homes and finances just like a real married quadruple.”

Katy said, “And we’ve had all the ceremony and officiating that any of us needed. Bright says she had some invisible wedding, and it’s all settled for all of us. None of us feel like it’s important at this point in our lives. Chet and I will break the news to our kids when we feel it’s time.”

I smiled and said, “OK, that gives us a good base to start from. Wow. I guess we’ve settled a lot already. The next step is to rent a space in a light industrial park. At least a thousand square feet but no more than fifteen hundred. We start moving anything we don’t need there. I have way too much stuff and need to thin it out considerably. We set up to sell things from there on various social media lists. We keep the sales local. No shipping and mailing. No auction sites.”

Katy said, “I can take care of the listings and meeting people at the site to sell things.”

I said, “There will be a warehouse space and a small office space. I’ve rented places like that before. We’ll need a desk and chairs and a small refrigerator and a computer with internet access. We’ll use a cell phone connection for the internet. No wired services. We’ll need electricity. We’ll use a small space heater for the office if we are still there when it gets a little colder.”

Bright said, “And a sofa. For naps and stuff.”

I said, “OK, that makes sense. As soon as we can get our houses relatively empty, we sell them.”

Angie said, “We could get an apartment.”
